Microneedling for EXCESS ARMPIT SWEATING (Hyperhidrosis)
So many of us are frustrated or embarrassed by sweaty, smelly armpits caused by hyperhidrosis. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you were worried about lifting up your arm, so you kept your arms held in close only to find that positioning yourself that way made them sweat even more
Well, you are certainly not alone in this predicament. Fortunately, modern technology has created a device that drastically decreases the sweat in our armpits AND extinguishes the smelly odor. Most people find that this treatment decreases arm pit sweating by at least 80%. Imagine yourself wearing a blue or gray shirt and not having to worry about lifting up your arms - ALL DAY LONG! This treatment is a real game changer! Once you’ve had this treatment your daily shirt choice will never again be limited by how the fabric looks when it’s wet!
People often ask, “is not being able to sweat from my armpits healthy?” Since the skin in our armpits accounts for approximately 1-2% of our body’s surface area, not sweating from that 1-2% of our skin is completely without risk or danger. When our body needs to cool down, the other 98-99% of our skin will sweat normally so that our body temperature can still be regulated appropriately.
The medical word for excessive sweating is “hyperhidrosis” and the anatomical word of armpit is axillary. So axillary hyperhidrosis literally means a condition of too much water in the armpits.
Our treatment for excessive armpit sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis) is safe, effective, and requires no down-time.
Microneedling with radiofrequency energy for Axillary Hyperhidrosis
Microneedling with radiofrequency energy (fractora) is an extraordinary device that combines microneedling with Radio Frequency energy. Fractora is typically used for skin rejuvenation. It is one of the best devices on the market to improve fine lines and wrinkles, diminish blemishes and reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks.
When used to treat hyperhidrosis, Fractora can safely and effectively stop the excess sweating.
The radiofrequency energy that is pulsed through the microneedles of Fractora targets the two different types of sweat glands: eccrine, the water producing glands; and apocrine, the odor producing glands. The energy applied effectively damages and disables the glands, such that the skin of the armpit produces less water and odor.
One of the most appealing benefits of Fractora for the treatment of Hyperhidrosis is that results are long lasting. How long lasting you may ask? This technology is fairly new. Scientific studies have shown that after two to four treatments with Fractora, more than half of those treated are sweat free at one year. So, we know the treatment can last for up to a year or more. Research hasn’t fully answered this question to date. We also know that some patients need to be treated every few months to maintain sweat free status.
What to Expect
You will shave your armpits 2 days before your Fractora treatment. When you arrive at Shea, numbing cream will be applied to your armpits for 30-45 minutes. Additionally, lidocaine may be injected into the area for maximal comfort. The procedure will take about 20 minutes per armpit. The square Fractora tip will be pressed into the skin such that every square inch of armpit skin is treated 2-3 times. The Fractora tip is small hand-held square piece that has 24 microneedles that penetrates about 2 mm into the skin (about 1/16th of an inch). While the microneedles are in the skin, radiofrequency energy is applied to them. This energy goes into the skin and damages the eccrine and apocrine sweat glands (the glands that are responsible from producing water and odor). Biopsies of armpit skin after the procedure shows decreased number and size of both glands.
At home, you’ll put aloe vera gel on the treated areas for about a week. Your armpits may be a bit sore and tender with mild pain, swelling, and redness for 2-3 days after the procedure.
Is Microneedling with Radiofrequency the Right Rreatment for Your Sweating Problem?
The best way to determine if Fractora is the answer to your excessive sweating problem is to schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Kirk Bass or one of Shea’s team members at Shea Aesthetic Clinic in Oak Ridge, TN.
